The Altinha Phenomenon: Much More Than a Sport, a Lifestyle

Discover altinha, the Brazilian phenomenon that goes beyond the beach. Understand how this lifestyle sport builds communities and is expanding around the world.

Beach, sun, friends, good vibes, smiles, and altinha. The social phenomenon known as a Brazilian lifestyle draws the attention of the world. And what if there’s no beach, no sun, or the people are strangers? The ball, the instrument of this phenomenon, will continue to fulfill its role through this sport called Altinha.

Lifestyle and the New Generations
There are three points that interact in complete harmony, each indispensable to the others. In today’s language, everyday habits, lifestyle, carry great relevance in how people see the world and how they live. It’s not that this wasn’t important years ago, but the time dedicated to thinking about it was much smaller than it is today. Younger generations have shown greater concern about how they use their time. There is a desire to be outdoors, since much of adult life is spent in front of a computer. Yes, it is a bit paradoxical, since so much of life happens in front of electronic devices. That is where the need comes from to balance this in the way time is used. As this understanding grows around the gaps opened up in daily life, caused by the lack of live interaction with other people, and around outdoor physical activities far from the virtual world, a collective need emerges to change, or adapt, social relationships.

The Social Role of Sport: Surfing, Skateboarding and Altinha
Sport in general has always played an important social role in human relationships. Some have been able to build their own community and lifestyle, going beyond the practice of the sport itself. As examples for illustration and comparison, we have surfing and skateboarding. These two sports, practiced differently and in different places, have been able to establish a way of life through the practice of the sport. However, to be considered on a global scale as sports of social transformation, their accessibility needs to be made easier. The cost of obtaining the equipment and the specific demands of their practice are limiting factors in that regard. Even with the existing barriers, these two sports have been able to grow in number of practitioners and people belonging to their community who share the same lifestyle. We could draw many other parallels between them and altinha, such as the similarity in lifestyle itself, the community, and the competitive spirit at some level, where even though the first two are individual and altinha is completely collective, celebrating great performances goes beyond winning at any cost.

Accessibility, Collectivity, and Female Inclusion
Altinha, also called alta or altinho (only if you’re over 40 years old), was by nature born more accessible than the other sports mentioned earlier. Here’s a parenthetical note and a call to attention for suppliers of balls made specifically for altinha: pay attention to ball distribution again! A ball slightly different from a soccer ball is the necessary equipment, and collectivity is the other factor. There is no altinha alone! That already automatically brings a collective sense and a sense of community. This lifestyle sport is collective and rooted in its community. Beyond daily practice, its way of competing was also born inclusive. There is no competition (or at least there shouldn’t be, since tournaments in Brazil follow this format) that does not have at least one female representative in its quartet. Female representation and leadership in this community are essential for the continuation of this movement on a global level.

The Simple Essence of the Game
To play altinha is simple, almost like a mantra. You need a ball and at least two people cooperating, helping one another, and keeping the ball in the air with one touch, without using their hands. Of course there are its complexities and other elements for a more advanced game, but it is not strictly necessary to know that side of it. The goal here is to show the simple part. The focus is on the low specificity of the equipment, the team and collaborative spirit, the outdoor activity, the sense of community, and the transformative power that comes from practicing altinha. Other elements are topics for another text. The

Global Expansion of Altinha
The evolution of altinha goes beyond becoming competitive; what began on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro is no longer limited to the sand. Lawns and parks, warehouses and soccer courts, public squares are already meeting points for the community around the world on every continent. Wherever there is a ball, more than one person, and a spirit of cooperation, there is altinha. Ball up. Keep it altinha.
